Church Van Driver Requirements and Job Description

Through the grace of God and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, First Presbyterian Church of Santa Barbara strives to be active in our changing world by ministering to all God’s people. 

 

Requirements – Drivers of vans carrying fewer than 10 passengers: 

  1. Be at least 21 but not older than 74* and have a valid class C driver’s license 
  2. Have current DMV Driving Record that meets current insurance requirements with respect to violations. 
  3. Complete “New Driver” information packet 
  4. Complete training conducted by church-designated trainer 
  5. Agree to be part of the CHP’s Pull Notice program and to step down as a driver if driving record fails to meet current insurance requirements 
  6. Submit to and pass an initial drug screening test 
  7. *Drivers aged 71-74 must past an annual physical exam 

 

Requirements – Drivers of vans carrying 10 or more passengers: 

  1. Be at least 25 but not older than 74* and have a valid class B driver’s license 
  2. Have current DMV Driving Record that meets current insurance requirements with respect to violations.  
  3. Complete “New Driver” information packet 
  4. Complete training conducted by church-designated trainer 
  5. Agree to be part of the CHP’s Pull Notice program and to step down as a driver if driving record fails to meet current insurance requirements 
  6. Submit to and pass an initial drug screening test 
  7. Agree to and be available to submit to random drug and alcohol screening tests 
  8. Pass annual/bi-annual physical exam as required by DMV for Class B drivers (*Drivers aged 71-74 must past an annual physical exam) 

 

Reports – All Drivers: 

  1. Prior to taking out van, conduct safety check and complete a “Daily Condition of Van” report. 
  2. All fields are to be completed as appropriate 
  3. Start time is when you begin the pre-driving inspection and Ending time is when you park the van at the completion of the trip  
  4. Form is to be submitted to Business Administrator (either in person or placed in inbox) at the end of the trip. 
  5. Report any condition issues as soon as possible to the Business Administrator. 

 

Reports – Class B Drivers: 

  1. In addition to the “Daily Condition of Van” report, all Class B drivers who engage in “compensated work” (i.e., are employed in some capacity, whether full- or part-time or self-employed) are to complete a “Driver Statement of On-Duty Hours” and attach to the “Daily” report. 
  2. If the trip is more than a 100 mile radius from the church or start to end time is greater than 12 hours, a log book entry needs to be made and turned in with the Daily. 

 

Responsibilities – Sunday Worship: 

  1. Sunday drivers’ schedule and signup sheets are in the workroom on the bulletin board behind the copier. If you are unable to drive on a day for which you’re scheduled, please make arrangements for another person to cover your date.   
  2. Meet in the workroom about twenty to thirty minutes before departure time to assist with listening to telephone messages and planning routes.  Instructions for retrieving messages are in the “Van Drawer” in the workroom. 
  3. Phone passengers prior to picking them up with an estimated time of arrival.  This should be done by the host.  However, if it needs to be done by the driver, it should be done from a prior stop. NEVER USE A PHONE WHILE YOU ARE DRIVING. 

 

Remarks: 

  1. Requests to use a van should be made at least one week in advance via the “Van Calendar” located at the front receptionist’s desk. 
  2. The “Van Drawer” in the workroom contains blank forms, keys to the vans, Sunday passenger cards, notes, maps etc. 
  3. Passengers must have seatbelts properly fastened.  Each van is equipped with an extension, located in the engine cover cubby hole. 
  4. If there is an emergency, please take appropriate action.  Emergency contact numbers are attached on the smaller clipboard under the check-out forms.
